How to Add an Image, Logo or Watermark to a PDF

Insert a picture into a PDF, resize and rotate it, set its opacity, place it behind the text and copy it to every page as a logo or watermark.

Adding a picture to a PDF covers a lot of everyday jobs: a company logo on a letterhead, a scanned stamp on an invoice, a photo in a report, a “DRAFT” or “CONFIDENTIAL” watermark across every page. PDFkitt places the image on the page, lets you position and style it, and writes it into the PDF on your device. PNG, JPEG, GIF, WebP and SVG files all work.

Insert and position an image

  1. Choose Insert → Image. Pick the image file from your device. It is placed on the current page at about 40% of the page width.
  2. Move it. Drag the image to where it belongs. Arrow keys nudge the selected image by small steps.
  3. Resize it. Drag any corner handle. The aspect ratio is locked, so the picture never looks squashed.
  4. Rotate it. Use the 90° button on the image’s toolbar, or type any angle.
  5. Fine-tune. The same toolbar has an opacity slider, the layer choice (in front of or behind the text), Arrange presets (corners, center, fit width) and Copy to every page.
  6. Download. Click Download, then Download PDF.

Add a watermark to every page

  1. Prepare the watermark image. A PNG with a transparent background works best, for example the word DRAFT in grey. A logo works too.
  2. Insert it on the first page and size it. Center it with the Arrange presets and rotate it if you want the classic diagonal look.
  3. Lower the opacity. Somewhere around 20–40% keeps the text underneath readable.
  4. Send it behind the text. Choose Behind text in the layer options so the page content sits on top of it.
  5. Copy to every page. Click Copy to every page. Each page gets its own copy at the same position, which you can still adjust individually.
  6. Download.

Tips

  • Large photos are downscaled to at most 3000 pixels on the longest side before they are embedded, which keeps the PDF a reasonable size. For print-quality images, resize them yourself first.
  • Original size. The Arrange menu can restore the image’s natural size, assuming 96 dpi.
  • Replacing an image that is already in the PDF is not supported. Cover it with the new image instead; set the new image in front and size it to match.
  • Signatures as images. A scan of your signature can be inserted this way, but the Signature tool remembers it for next time; see signing a PDF.
  • Images on a blank page. Pages panel → Blank page, then Insert → Image and Fit width, is a quick way to add a photo or a scanned attachment as a page of its own.

Frequently asked

Is the image uploaded anywhere?

No. It is read from your device into the browser tab and embedded into the PDF there.

Does SVG keep its sharpness?

SVG files are rasterised when they are embedded, at a resolution suited to the size you give them. For logos, a high-resolution PNG gives a predictable result.

Can I put an image in the header of every page at different sizes?

After Copy to every page, each copy is independent: click a copy on any page to move, resize or delete just that one.
